Federal Reserve is asking for Sweeping New`Powers

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson plans to call for extensive, wide-ranging reforms to the way the government regulates financial markets, including proposals to give the Federal Reserve more power and create new bodies to monitor mortgages and other transactions.
The many items in the Treasury plan include a proposal to make the Fed "responsible for overall issues of financial market stability," according to the executive summary.
In addition to the Fed's current powers to provide liquidity through its monetary policy tools, the central bank "should be provided with a different, yet critically important regulatory role and broad powers focusing on the overall financial system," the document said.
The new role would include "the responsibility and authority to gather appropriate information, disclose information, collaborate with the other regulators on rule writing, and take corrective actions when necessary in the interest of overall financial market stability," it said, adding that this was a "long-term" component of the plan.
This seems plenty scary to me. We the people seem to loose more and more control over our own affairs every day.

China wants sun on demand for Beijing Olympics

At this summer’s Beijing Olympics, China puts a 50-year experiment to the test: Officials are betting weather modification can keep the sun shining on the Games. Despite shaky science, the government is confident (not for the first time) that man can best nature. Whatever their chances, there’s plenty at stake—because all that development and urban renewal won’t look so good beneath a curtain of smog. This just sounds plain dangerous to me. Could it mess up the weather world wide?

Lawmaker's Comments on Homosexuality Spark Hate Campaign, Death Threats

An audio clip posted on YouTube earlier this month is responsible for a hate-filled campaign of threats and harassment being directed at an Oklahoma state lawmaker, her family and her Christian faith.

Rep. Sally Kern (R-Oklahoma City) said the clip of a talk she gave on the homosexual political agenda has been accessed "probably a million times" since homosexual activists posted it on the popular online video gallery. It has prompted an outpouring of hatred against her, she told Cybercast News Service.

"We have received close to 30,000 e-mails," Kern said. "When this first hit YouTube, the vast majority of the e-mails were hate mail - vile, vulgar, profane."

Police Call Church Music 'Disorderly'

A Michigan church filed a federal lawsuit after police officers, led by a local prosecutor, entered the sanctuary at least twice without a warrant, alleging the church's music was too loud. In one instance, they threatened to arrest church musicians for disorderly conduct.

Faith Baptist Church, with a congregation of about 10,000 members, is suing local officials in the Township of Waterford, Mich., in a First Amendment case a church attorney said could have national ramifications in establishing what local governments can do in regulating churches.

The suit -- alleging the township violated the church's freedom of religious expression, freedom of speech and freedom of association -- was filed earlier this month in U.S. District Court in Detroit after the church had been subject to what it describes as raids by the Waterford Police Department, led by township prosecutor Walter Bedell.

At least one of those raids occurred during a Sunday service, according to the suit.

The U.S. Air Force mistakenly shipped fuses that are used in nuclear weapons to Taiwan

The U.S. Air Force mistakenly shipped fuses that are used in nuclear weapons to Taiwan in 2006, believing the crates contained helicopter batteries, officials at the Pentagon announced this morning.

The error -- undetected by the United States until last week, despite repeated inquiries by Taiwan -- raises questions about how carefully the Pentagon safeguards its weapons systems. It also exposes the United States to criticism from China, a staunch opponent of a militarized Taiwan.

Human Remains Found in Dumpster of Abortion Clinic

(CNSNews.com) - The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the Lathrup Village (Mich.) Police Department are investigating the contents of a dumpster behind the WomanCare abortion clinic where body parts of aborted babies, bio-hazardous materials and patients'medical records were found earlier this month.

At least one patient died -- a 15-year-old girl in 2004 -- following an abortion at one of Hodari's clinics, but no criminal charges were filed.
